Real Challenges in the Labor Market and Public Safety – Summary of the WRDS Meeting
The recent meeting of the Regional Social Dialogue Council focused on the condition of uniformed services and changes in waste management, addressing key issues affecting workers and local residents.
On October 29, another session of the Regional Social Dialogue Council (WRDS) took place, with particular attention given to the state of uniformed services such as the Police, Prison Service, and Border Guard. This topic proved to be highly relevant and important for the safety and development of the region.
Among the major challenges faced by the uniformed services in Silesia were historically high vacancy rates, lower-than-market wages for civilian employees, increasing staff turnover, and operational pressure. Fewer young people see these services as an attractive career path, which further exacerbates the difficulty of recruiting competent personnel.
It was emphasized that similar issues of workforce shortages and skill gaps are also present across the broader labor market. Key challenges include the lack of long-term human resources strategies, insufficient investment in people, and low wages. Participants agreed that without adequate staffing, no institutions can function effectively, which directly impacts the sense of security and the possibility for social and economic development.
The second part of the meeting was devoted to proposed changes in waste management, which in its current form could lead to a significant increase in costs for municipalities, entrepreneurs, and residents of the region. WRDS is working to develop a unified stance aimed at preventing the negative consequences of these changes.
WRDS members underscore the immense value of dialogue among workers, employers, local governments, and state authorities. Joint discussions of real challenges and seeking practical solutions bring tangible benefits and enable the implementation of changes that positively affect the region's inhabitants.
